- JOHNSON & JOHNSON took its pain reliever off the
- market when faced with a product tampering scare.
- The decision to remove Tylenol was temporarily
- costly in dollars but the strong market leadership
- was reinforced. One of its senior executives when
- asked about the recall responded:
- "We never really though we had much of a choice.
- Our code of conduct was such a way of life in
- the firm that our employees, including me, would
- have been scandalized had we taken another course.
- We never seriously considered avoiding the costly
- recall."

- Sir Adrian CADBURY'S grandfather resolved an ethical
- conflict. He was deeply and publicly opposed to the
- Anglo-Boer War. The Queen ordered his chocolate company
- to send a "decorative tin with a bar of chocolate to all
- soldiers serving in South Africa". Recognizing the need
- to provide employment for his workers as well as the
- morale impact on the soldiers, he produced the chocolate
- at cost. He did not personally profit from a situation
- that he considered to be unethical.

- A Seattle-based engineering consultancy,Parametrix Inc.
- had to pay $350,000 after the SPA caught it with
- bootleg software. The SPA is a trade group of 792 soft-
- ware companies that has policed the used of pirated
- software since 1988. The software industry loses about
- $4 billion per year through software piracy. The SPA
- files lawsuits at the rate of 2 per week. Companies are
- taking a firm stand against employees who pirate, and
- most MIS departments are on the side of SPA!

- The Irvine Unified School District (Irvine,California)
- announced in early 1992 that it will teach at all
- grade levels a core set of values,"based in the belief
- that there are values and qualitites of character to
- which people in all sucessful civilizations subscribe."
- The list of values to be taught includes:
- honesty,responsibility,compassion,perseverance,
- respectfulness,cooperation,courage,and
- citizenship.
